Mail Order: A Great Home Business Idea
by: Dean Phillips
While the world continues to go catatonic over the Internet and its endless possibilities, there’s another industry quietly going about its business, racking up billions of dollars in profits, year after profitable year after profitable year. What industry is that? It’s the mail order industry.
Yes, long before the birth and explosion of the Internet, mail order shopping was a hugely popular and preferred method of doing business–and still is. In fact, the Internet has actually enhanced and contributed to the overall success of mail order.
The mail order industry was created by Aaron Montgomery Ward. Ward sent out his first mail order catalog in 1872– for his Montgomery Ward mail order business located at Clark and Kinzie Streets in Chicago. The first catalog consisted of a single sheet of paper with a price list, 8 by 12 inches, showing the merchandise for sale with ordering instructions.
“Ward’s gradually expanded the catalog. They became bigger, more heavily illustrated, chock full of goods– often referred to as “dream books” by rural families.”
Aaron Montgomery Ward was born on Feb. 17, 1844 and died on Dec. 7, 1913. He first worked for Marshall Field, a department store, as both a store clerk and a traveling salesman. As a traveling salesman, he realized that his rural customers could be better served by mail-order, a revolutionary idea. He started his business with only $2,400 in capital. Montgomery Ward was a mail-order only business until 1926, when the first Montgomery Ward retail store opened in Plymouth, Indiana.
And the rest, as they say is history!
Over the years, I’ve actually owned several profitable mail order businesses–selling everything from books to vitamins to my copywriting services.
It really is an amazingly fun way to do business! Absolutely nothing beats the thrill of receiving checks in the mail! And even though I’m no longer involved in mail order to the degree that I once was, I credit mail order for giving me the invaluable training, experience and skills I use on the Internet every single day.
Not having much success on the Internet? Try your hand at mail order. However, before getting started, I suggest you read the following books:
“How To Get Rich In Mail Order,” by Melvin Powers, “Money In Your MailBox,” by L. Perry Wilbur, “How To Make A Fortune In Mail Order,” by Al Stern and “Building A Mail Order Business,” by William A. Cohen .
Many books have been written about mail order, over the years, but the aforementioned books are among the best ever written on the subject. Granted, they are somewhat dated in some areas, but the information itself is still solid as a rock.
You should be able to find these books at your local library, since they’re all-time classics. However, if you don’t have any luck at the library, try Amazon.com.
These books will provide you with valuable insight into the remarkable and enduring mail order industry, and you just might discover a fun new way of doing business you never even considered before!

Working at home is a dream for many, but few understand just how to get started. If you are looking to earn some serious money apart from your regular job or even replace your existing job, consider starting your own online home business.
When you start your own online home business, you are doing a very simple yet important thing; taking charge of your financial future. This takes courage, because there are many unknowns when starting out. However, if you are serious about fulfilling your financial goals, you definitely have to start a venture of your own. Otherwise you will spend the rest of your life tied down to a regular job, making money for somebody else.
Now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with holding down a job. That’s an accomplishment in itself. Take the person that retires after 50 years of faithful service. That is something to be proud of. However, if you are stuck with a job that does not interest you, or nurture your personal growth, then you have a problem. You will be making a trade-off between your happiness and the money that you receive. In addition, recent studies indicate that the majority of people retire without enough money to live out the rest of there lives comfortably.
In the short-run, a regular job is a solution for paying the bills, but in the long-run it may prevent you from taking advantage of the opportunities that come your way. Once you’re used to doing the same type of work day after day, you may begin to expect nothing else from life. You get into a rut; and this rut may take such a great hold on you that you don’t even realize that you’re in one. If you feel a sense of unease concerning what you do from day to day, or if you are simply bored with life, then you can be sure that you are in a rut.
How does one break free of a rut? By doing something new, something exciting, and something fresh! There’s an old aphorism that says that “variety is the spice of life”, and that’s true. If you’ve long wanted to start your own financial venture, do it today!
Starting an online home business is easy, and by working online you will begin to experience the thrill of working for yourself. Working for yourself can give you a new lease on life. After many years of working to make someone else rich, wouldn’t it be nice to apply all your skills and talents to making your dreams come true? When you have your own home internet business and working online, you will be in complete control of your time, which ultimately means that you are in control of your life. We all really have one life to live, so don’t you think it’s a good idea to start living the life you’ve always wanted?

Home Based Internet Business: Where do I start?

How A Beginner Could Choose a Suitable Affiliate Program To Kick Start Online Home Business
May 27, 2008
Don’t get me wrong. Network marketing is great. Even Robert Kiyosaki, in his Rich Dad book series, recommends getting involved in a network marketing company as a means to earn money and learn how to run a business. (And if you haven’t read Robert Kiyosaki, put him on your must list, NOW) But network marketing is only great IF you find the right company and the company is right for you.
Isn’t Network Marketing a Pyramid Scheme?
Let’s get one thing straight. A legitimate network marketing company is NOT a “pyramid scheme.” A pyramid scheme is designed to allow only those at the top to make all the money and those poor suckers who bought in at the bottom to do all the work and pass their money up. Pyramids like this are illegal. Network marketing is not. “But wait,” I hear you protest. “Network marketing has a pyramid structure. Doesn’t that make it a pyramid scheme?” No. EVERY company has a pyramid structure.
Take a look at a grocery store, for example. The one person who owns the store is at the top and makes the most money, yes? And the numerous employees who actually work in the stores working the registers, bagging the groceries, and collecting the carts from the parking lot don’t make nearly as much money, right? Pyramid. Period.
How Do I Know If It’s Legit?
A legitimate network marketing company has a compensation plan that guarantees that anyone working the business can make money. It doesn’t guarantee that they will, just that they can. Making money is up to you. Also, if they’re legit, they have an actual product or service to market.
If you get the vague sense that you’re handing over your money and you’re not sure why - run away. You should see a tangible product or service being offered for you to market. Their business records will also be available for you to look up.
What’s So Great About It?
The greatest thing is that the business system is already in place. All you have to do is duplicate the system. You might have to carry some inventory, depending on the company, but all of the gnarly business-y sides of things are usually handled by the company. You just have to market the product or service. And if you work the system, there really is the potential to earn some substantial money. I know. I’ve done it.
What’s Not So Great About It?
Well, it’s the nature of the Network Marketing beast. You have to recruit other people to become “Independent Associates.” And often that means going after your “warm market” - your friends and family. And, let’s be honest, most of them will look at you like you’re crazy and you should get a “real job.”
But let’s be honest - your real job is what led you to look into network marketing and a home based business to begin with!! While many companies tell you to go after your warm market, I recommend otherwise. It may seem more difficult to recruit people you don’t know, but really, if they don’t know you, you have the power. You have the authority to show them a business opportunity and it lends you credibility if they don’t know up front that you’re also working at the mall and living in a studio apartment with a mattress and a jar of mustard in the fridge. “Isn’t that lying?” Nope. That’s selling, baby.
The other downside is the meetings. They don’t like to call them “meetings.” They prefer the term “Open House” or some such thing. Either way, you have to dress up and go to a hotel ballroom once, twice, three times a week and play excited to hear the same presentation over and over again until you are successful at the business yourself. Then you can call the shots.
So Is It Right For Me?
Ultimately, that’s up to you. Go with your gut. Do you trust the company? Do you like the people who are already involved? Do you believe in the product or service you’ll be offering? That’s the biggie. If you don’t believe in it, you won’t be able to sell it. You might, but not as well. Do you have the time to devote to a home business? And are you willing to commit and withstand that negative berating you’re likely to get? Don’t let that put you off, though. People berated Bill Gates, too. Now look.
If you decide to join a network marketing company, good for you. Give it all you got and you can be a huge success.

If you are new to online business, like I used to be, the fastest way to start your Internet online business is by becoming an affiliate to sell some one else’s products because it allows you to make money from your website visitors without having to worry about shipping and payment processing.
The products from the affiliate owners are usually information products such as electronic books (eBook) and software that can be delivered as a file that is then downloaded directly to your customers’ computers. They could be repeatedly reproduced and downloaded and sold at no cost. There’s no packing, shipping and delivery cost.
The question you’ve to ask yourself is how can you determine which of the thousands of affiliate programs available in the Internet is suitable?
Many beginners encountered disappointment and frustration after signing up with some affiliate programs only to find out later that they eventually end up having brought in very little money if any, after wasting a lot of time and effort.
Hence the choice of affiliate programs is of utmost importance.
The most important criteria you should look for are:
1) They must offer products that the market is asking for or that are already in demand i.e. the low hanging fruit type of products, rather than creating new ideas hoping that the consumers would be convinced to buy.
2) The affiliate program must offer good commission to their affiliates. Although different people define “good” differently, generally if it could bring in about $500/month as a start, it would be something worth looking into. As mentioned, affiliate programs offer high commission for their information products such as e-books and software. The owners of these affiliate programs can afford to give large commissions (50% or more) because of low cost of “production”.
3) It must be easy to set up with step by step easy to follow instruction. And the website should be simple and yet attractive.
4) They should provide you with banners, images, links, sample ads and articles and emails to help you promote their products. Besides, they should also have a good support system for helping you with any problems you might have.
Do not be satisfied only by the above mentioned points. You should conduct further research to check on the background of the organisations behind the products, their quality, reliability and reputation. Wherever applicable, testimonials must be obtained and verified.
Study the affiliate agreement and assess the organisations you’re dealing with. Check their quality of service by sending them an email or calling them to see how quickly and how effectively they respond - or if they ever respond at all. Assess their affiliate products. If you yourself are not convinced by the quality and effectiveness of the products, drop it and move on to another program.
There are sites which review, compare and recommend some great affiliate programs. You should be able to find some programs with the right categories of products to sell.
Like most search engines, visitors love content of our websites. Content is o?ne of the most important aspects of attracting potential prospects to your web sites and prompting them to become customers based on the “AIDA” logic i.e. Attention, Intention, Desire and Action.
As far as possible, choose affiliate programs which relate to what you are already doing, and then promote those products.
Join relevant online discussion forums and seek information and advice from those who are already successful being an affiliate.
Once you’ve decided, draft a simple business plan, set target of your goals, budget your expenditure, follow the instructions given, be fully committed and go for it!
See you in the Web. Start taking your first step tonight in your pyjamas! Good luck!

Success Secrets To Having A Successful Work At Home Business.
May 24, 2008
This article is advice about what medical transcription is, what skills a home based medical transcriptionist needs, what the initial investment is to start a home based medical transcription business and what someone should consider when choosing the right medical transcription training course.
What Goes Into Starting A Successful Home Based Medical Transcription Business?
If you don’t know that’s OK! Most beginners to the home based medical transcription industry don’t either but this website will give you an expert overview of the industry. We will also direct you to what is being referred to as “The Bible” of the home based medical transcription business so whatever isn’t covered here will be then (in-depth) by a very successful 9 year home based medical transcription veteran. You Won’t Go Wrong If You Act Upon What We Share With You!
Who Am I & Why Should You Follow My Advice?
That’s a fair question and I would be rather shocked if you didn’t want to know. Please understand that the following answer to your question is not an attempt to satisfy my own ego but rather to show you that I am not some “QUACK” that just dispenses unfounded theories or hype. My name is Paul Hackett and helping people start their own home based medical billing (MB) & medical transcription (MT) businesses is my passion.
I am the president of a successful home based medical billing and transcription business (Stelo Medical Management, Inc.), a medical consultation business (Stelo Enterprises, Ltd.) and the author of the internets #1 selling home based medical billing business startup guide entitled “Medical Billing Book For Home Based Beginners”.
I’ve been in the home based medical billing & transcription business for 8 years, built all my businesses from scratch, have helped hundreds of medical billing & transcription beginners start their own home based MB & MT businesses. I have earned my trust within both industries by giving out only useful and truthful information about the field. Now that you know who I am and what I represent lets get down to the meat of the issue!
Is Medical Transcription A Legitimate Home Based Business?
Yes, it is and it has been for decades. It is not one of those widely advertised scams that you would see online or in newspapers like the medical billing industry is plagued with. Medical Transcriptionists have three options when deciding how they want to work:
1) Work inside a practice, hospital, etc.- if you take this route then you could make the equivalent of $9-15 per hour depending on your skill, accuracy and geographic location. As with any other job you will be supplied with everything you need (including benefits) by your employer.
2) Work as an independent/self employed medical transcriptionist - This is when you work completely for/by yourself, you take care of your taxes, you sign up and maintain your own client/accounts, you market your services, you provide your own benefits, etc. You’ll probably start out at the equivalent of $10-15 per hour (or 6-14c per line) and in time (years) you could be earning the equivalent of $15-$40 per hour depending upon the amount of work, clients and type of equipment that you use. A lot of medical transcriptionist around the nation rather doing business this way (including me) and once you see the pros and cons of the business and speak to a CPA you’ll see that this route is rather lucrative and you’re the boss. Simply put, you own the company so you do whatever you must to make it a success. Or;
3) Contract with a national company - with this type of medical transcription you are referred to as Statutory Employee. It is the same as the above mentioned position with the exception that the company you contract with usually pays 7.5% of the FICA tax, they might give you certain equipment to do the job their way and they will assign the workload expectation and pay.
What Is Medical Transcription?
Medical transcription is the process whereby one accurately and swiftly transcribes medical records dictated by doctors and others, including history and physical reports, clinic notes, office notes, operative reports, consultation notes, discharge summaries, letters, psychiatric evaluations, laboratory reports, x-ray reports and pathology reports.
It involves receiving dictation by tape, digital system or voice file, the use of ear/head phones, a foot pedal for start-stop control, a variety of word processing programs and sometimes the use of a printer and a modem. Today many home based medical transcriptionists still deliver their completed work back to the office but with technology being what it is now it’s just as simple to deliver the work via a modem. If you work of a national company they may require you to use a modem to download and transmit the work.
What Skills Does A Home Based Medical Transcriptionist Need?
Let me put it this way, having a computer at home and knowing how to type fast is not enough to become a successful medical transcriptionist. You MUST:
Take A Really Good Online Medical Transcription Training Course (or attend a good school-college-trade or vocational school),
Have Good Listening Skills,
Great English Grammar Skills,
Excellent Computer Skills,
Superior Research Skills,
Possess High Typing Speeds With Great Accuracy,
Pay Great Attention To Detail,
Have A Great Foundation In Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Laboratory Tests And Values, Medical Equipment and Procedures,
Possess The Ability To Work Alone (Usually you won’t have much contact with others),
Possess The Ability To Work Under Pressure And Sometimes Under A Deadline, and
Posses The Ability To Sit In Front Of A Computer For Extended Amounts Of Time.
You will need to invest in several different types of publications such as: an English dictionary, a grammar and style guide, a complete medical dictionary, a drug index, a laboratory and pathology word book, a medical word book by specialty, a surgery word book, a medical abbreviation word book, other specialty word books and a physician directory and other journals.
You will also need to use several different pieces of software such as a medical spellchecker and an abbreviation system such as PRD or Smartype. You will also need to learn all you can about your own computer so you can employ all the ticks and shortcuts within it to greatly enhance your productivity. Remember that you need to always have your hands on the keyboard because the more you type and type accurately is the greater your pay will be.
What’s The Initial Investment Needed To Do Medical Transcription?
This varies and it depends on several factors like:
Do you already have a home office or if you’re starting from scratch?
Do you have formal medical transcription training or not?
Do you already have most of the books you will need?
Do you have the necessary software programs to do the job professionally?
Do you need to purchase additional software or hardware?
The great thing is that you can buy most of the things you need (used) from places like Ebay and other places that support the home based medical transcription industry. Your four major purchases will be your medical transcription training, transcriber, computer and reference books so your investment will be very minimal compared to doing medical billing from home where the investment can be as much as $6,000 to get the business of the ground.
How Do You Choose The Right Medical Transcription Training Course?
OK, this is the last segment that I’m going to cover but at the conclusion I will tell you exactly where to get the most in-depth, informative and comprehensive medical transcription training for the least amount of money to start your home based business.
When it comes to a medical transcription course or medical transcription correspondence course then you will have a plethora of choices (especially if you search online). So let’s start with your choices:
College Courses
Vocational School or Trade School
On The Job Training
Learn On Your Own or
Online Medical Transcription Training Course or Correspondence Courses
Now allow me to say that how one medical transcriptionist got their training might not be right type of training for you because everyone learns differently.
I know people that have learned the trade by doing on-the-job training with the help of other experienced medical transcriptionists but the learning curve was huge because they knew nothing before starting. I also know people that trained themselves (that’s bold and I commend them) but even they have told me if they were to do it all over again that they would have learned it through some sort of school or online medical transcription training course (once again the learning curve is a killer). Here’s a break down of what a good medical transcription training course should consist of:
Medical Terminology,
Acronyms, eponyms, abbreviations,
Anatomy,
Physiology,
Laboratory tests and values,
Medical procedures and equipment,
Drugs,
Transcription formatting,
Ethics of medical transcription,
Research methods and resources,
Brush-up typing (if you need it),
Brush-up English grammar ,
Marketing,
MT “business” skills
You should also look for a medical transcription training course that will give you all the up-to-date equipment you’ll need to learn on (at no addition charge), award you with a “Certificate Of Completion” (not to be confused with “Certification”) and if the course or school has employment programs for after you complete the medical transcription training at no addition expense to you then that’s great!
I have had the opportunity to speak with several working MT’s, home based MT’s, schools, online medical transcription training courses, the alumni of medical transcription training programs and then applied my own experience to base my conclusions on. I feel that if you have the time to attend a good local college, vocational or trade school then go that route (it will be expensive) but if you don’t have the time or money then take a good online medical transcription training course. The problem like I said is that there are so many that it’s an overwhelming task to choose a good and affordable one .
I chose the following because they give you a very well-rounded education, great phone-email-fax-mail support and a slew of bonuses that come with the course instead of as an addition with an extra charge. Here are a few extras: up-to-date equipment used in the industry, a copy of the course in hard copy, unlimited number of final exam retakes, 2 year graduate job database membership, letters of recommendation, reasonable payment options, evaluation of your resume for employment, evaluation of your home based MT sales/marketing letter and a hotline to help you after you become employed just to name a few.
You’ll see that you have four different learning options that are very well priced depending on what goals you are trying to achieve. For Example: lets say that you choose their “Home Based Medical Center Package” to learn medical transcription, medical billing and medical coding (Wow! What A Package). Think about how much you’ll be worth to a physician, group practice, clinic, hospital, nursing home, etc..
Imagine the amounts of money/salary that you’ll command from employers or your clients due to your knowledge of all three professions. Plus in a home based business you’ll have the ability to offer each of your clients three distinct services compared to most businesses that only offer one (you’ll be financially secure in no time)! So without further delay here’s my #1 choice for the best medical transcription training course of 2005: http://tinyurl.com/2347z.
Trust me when I say you’ll be doing yourself and your business a big disservice if you don’t enroll because if you train with the 2nd or 3rd best what’s the likelihood you’ll be considered as a 1st rate medical transcriptionist in your potential clients eyes?
Starting a medical transcription business from home is not rocket science but you should get all the expert advice that you can so that your journey will be a less rocky one. I have read several “Home Based Medical Transcription Books” but none of them cater to the beginners to the industry or even come close to the amount of useful information that is given in Michele’s book entitled “Step-By-Step Guide To Medical Transcription At Home” http://tinyurl.com/wool.
You must read Michele’s ebook today because she covers all the necessary topics that you must know about the field and because she also owns a very successful home based medical transcription business she is more than qualified to help you become the success that you see yourself being.
I’ve really enjoyed the time we’ve spent together today and I hope that you learned what you need to consider before you decide to venture into the home based medical transcription business.

What Does it REALLY Take to do that Home Business?
May 22, 2008
BlancCopyright 2005 Ron LeBlanc
So youre there at that webpage again. Looking at all the smiling faces and all the people telling how they started with five minutes a day and no money down and now they have a vacation home in Aspen. Is it real? Can average Joes and Janes really make it that big?
Yes and no. I have personally met many average people who have made many hundreds of thousands of dollars each in home businesses. Some of them had impressive educations and backgrounds. Some were pretty unimpressive before. Ive met a tattoo parlor owner, a bouncer, a college coach, and a homemaker. All of them have made multiple six figure incomes. They were average in terms of their education and work background, but there are also some things about them that arent average at all.
Did they have to train for years and listen to a home correspondence course of hundreds of CDs? No. Did they go get another degree? No. Did they just get lucky? I dont think so. The reason I dont think so is because they all had a few things in common. Logic tells me that if the things they had in common produced the same result, then maybe thats not luck.
I have known all of these people personally, and I can show you some of the things that they had in common. If you have/do these things then you also have a great chance at success. If you dont do these things, then your chances of success are slimmer.
Firstly, each one of them treats their home business like a real business. If you dont put your business near the top with family and your current job, then guess what you will continue to have that job. What that comes down to is making decisions like your whole future depends on it. Dont feel like calling that last contact? Cant attend that company function? That $2000 for marketing could be used for those new curtains or that new stereo. Those are the key decisions and all these people made them with their business in mind first.
Secondly, they all had a very pressing why to their business. For some it was the heartbreak of dropping off their 2-year old in day care. For others it was a divorce or separation and they would have lost everything. In every case these people had a why that gripped them like a grandmother who hadnt seen them in three years.
I have seen people who were asked about why they are doing a business or what their goal was and they were vague such as, I want to get financially free, I want more time at home, you get the picture. Worse yet some people have a negative reason such as I want to be out of debt, or I hate my job. Those are NOT going to carry you through the hard times.
If you cant tell me right now exactly WHY you want to do a business, then you may want to consider figuring that out before you get started. Get really specific and positive. What do you want to accomplish? When do you want to have it by? What are you going to use the $30k in the next month for? How much will you give away?
Once you have concrete answers to these questions, then you are ready to start looking at the how-to. I will discuss the process of figuring out your why in my next article. Dont miss it!
