Yugoslavia ("Jugoslavija" in the Latin alphabet, "Југославија" in Cyrillic; English: South Slavia , or literally The Land of South Slavs ) describes three political entities that existed successively on the Balkan Peninsula in Europe, during most of the 20th century. The former constituent Socialist Republics of Yugoslavia, now independent States, are Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Kosovo, formerly an autonomous province of Serbia, is a partially recognized State which declared its independence in 2008. It was not a socialist republic of the former Yugoslavia; it had the status of a socialist autonomous province within Serbia along with Vojvodina.
The first country was called "Country of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs" (Slovene: Država Slovencev, Hrvatov in Srbov; Croatian: Država Slovenaca, Hrvata i Srba; Serbian: Држава Словенаца, Хрвата и Срба). The country was established on 29 October 1918. It lasted only for a month; on 1 December 1918 it joined together with the "Kingdom of Serbia" (Serbian: Краљевина Србија) to form "Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes" (Serbian: Краљевина Срба, Хрвата и Словенаца; Croatian: Kraljevina Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca; Slovene: Kraljevina Srbov, Hrvatov in Slovencev). The country was re-named on 3 October 1929 and henceforth it would be called "Kingdom of Yugoslavia" (Serbian: Краљевина Југославија; Croatian, Slovene: Kraljevina Jugoslavija). It was invaded on 6 April 1941 by the Axis powers and its army capitulated eleven days later. The legal royal government in exile was recognized and supported by Allied forces. In 1943, the communist led resistance movement proclaimed a new country called Democratic Federal Yugoslavia. The Kingdom was officially abolished in 1945.
In 1956, the country was renamed to Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. The parliamentary democracy was suspended and a communist state was established. In 1963, the country was renamed again to Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). Starting in 1991, the SFRY disintegrated in the Yugoslav Wars which followed the secession of most of the republic's constituent elements.
The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) (March 27, 1992–February 3, 2003), was a federation on the territory of the two remaining republics of Serbia (including the provinces of Vojvodina, Kosovo) and Montenegro.
The Union of Serbia and Montenegro was formed on February 4, 2003, and officially abolished the name "Yugoslavia." On June 3 and June 5, 2006, Montenegro and Serbia respectively declared their independence, thereby ending the last remnants of the loose agreement. On February 18, 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia, an act not recognized by Serbia.
